Electricity Tariff Hike Likely After Fuel Price Surge

Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari has signalled a potential upward revision in electricity tariffs in light of the recent surge in petroleum prices, as the government evaluates a range of energy conservation measures to manage increasing supply-side pressures.

In a statement issued via X, the minister highlighted that the current energy challenges are not confined to oil alone but are also impacting the availability and pricing of gas and furnace oil. These factors, he noted, are likely to have a direct bearing on electricity generation costs. He further stated that consultations are ongoing with provincial authorities to consider revisions in market operating hours and the implementation of additional demand-management strategies aimed at reducing overall energy consumption.

This development follows a substantial increase in domestic fuel prices, with petrol rising by Rs137 per litre to Rs458.40 and diesel by Rs184.49 per litre to Rs520.35. The adjustments have been attributed to escalating global oil prices amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Government officials have indicated that efforts are being made to mitigate the burden on end consumers while addressing the rising cost of energy inputs. The minister emphasized the importance of energy conservation, noting that reduced consumption could help alleviate systemic pressure and improve supply stability.

In a related development, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah cautioned that continued regional instability may further intensify economic challenges facing the country.

The increase in fuel prices has prompted criticism from opposition parties, which have announced plans for public protests. The government, however, has maintained that the price adjustments are reflective of prevailing global market dynamics and are unavoidable under current circumstances.
