PM Promotes EVs to Cut Fuel and Costs

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the strategic importance of transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) as a means to reduce petroleum consumption and protect the country’s foreign exchange reserves. Speaking at a vehicle handover ceremony for the Islamabad Traffic Police, he underscored the need to replicate such environmentally sustainable initiatives across all provinces and law enforcement agencies.

The Ministry of Interior facilitated the provision of an initial fleet of 15 battery-operated EVs, with further inductions planned in subsequent phases. According to official specifications, each vehicle is capable of covering approximately 350–400 kilometres on a full charge. Fast charging is estimated to require between 60 to 90 minutes, while standard charging cycles range from 6 to 8 hours.

From a financial perspective, the EVs are projected to yield substantial cost efficiencies compared to conventional petrol-powered vehicles, with estimated monthly savings of up to Rs0.55 million per vehicle. Based on these projections, the capital cost of procurement is expected to be recovered within a period of approximately 13 to 14 months.

Operationally, the vehicles will be deployed for patrol duties across key corridors in Islamabad, with each unit staffed by a designated team comprising a captain, two responders, and a driver, equipped with specialized uniforms.

The Prime Minister commended Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and the relevant police authorities for the successful execution of the initiative, highlighting that such measures not only reduce reliance on imported fuels but also contribute to long-term fiscal sustainability and environmental protection.
