Fuel Prices Cut with Major Diesel Price Drop

The federal government has announced a significant reduction in petroleum product prices, providing notable relief to consumers impacted by inflationary pressures. As per a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, effective April 11, 2026, the price of petrol has been reduced by Rs11.83 per litre, while High-Speed Diesel (HSD) has been lowered by Rs134.81 per litre.

Consequently, petrol prices have been revised downward from Rs378.41 to Rs366.58 per litre, whereas HSD prices have been substantially decreased from Rs520.35 to Rs385.54 per litre.

The reduction in diesel prices is particularly noteworthy given its extensive utilization across critical sectors of the economy. Petrol, primarily consumed by motorcycles, passenger vehicles, rickshaws, and other light transport modes, directly impacts urban commuters and middle-income households. The price reduction is therefore expected to alleviate transportation expenses and provide some degree of relief from elevated living costs.

In contrast, High-Speed Diesel serves as a key input for heavy transport operations, including freight trucks, public transport buses, and intercity logistics, as well as for agricultural machinery such as tractors and tube wells. The substantial decrease in HSD prices is anticipated to reduce transportation and logistics costs, with potential downstream effects on the pricing of essential goods, including food items.

From a broader economic perspective, the pronounced reduction in diesel prices is likely to contribute toward easing inflationary pressures, given the central role of transport and distribution costs in determining overall price levels within the economy.

This latest revision comes amid a period of sustained high fuel prices, and the government’s intervention is expected to deliver immediate financial relief to consumers while supporting macroeconomic stability.
