Punjab Launches AI Infrastructure and Digital Economy Plan

The Government of Punjab, through its Office of Artificial Intelligence, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Bank of Punjab to collaboratively develop advanced digital infrastructure aimed at accelerating the province’s artificial intelligence and digital economy objectives.

Under the terms of the agreement, a Punjab AI Data Center and a Financial Data Warehouse will be established at Nawaz Sharif IT City, forming the foundational infrastructure to support data-driven governance and AI-enabled financial services across the province.

The initiative is being executed under the leadership of Advisor to the Chief Minister on Artificial Intelligence Ali Dar, who stated that the collaboration is intended to promote the practical deployment of artificial intelligence solutions within both public administration and financial systems.

Officials have indicated that this initiative forms part of a broader strategic framework aimed at positioning Punjab as the leading AI-enabled province in South Asia by 2029, with the longer-term objective of establishing a regional AI hub supported by an integrated digital ecosystem.

As part of the implementation framework, AI-driven financial tools will be introduced to enhance access to credit for key sectors, including agriculture, small and medium enterprises, housing, and underserved communities. These tools are expected to streamline lending processes and promote financial inclusion through data-centric decision-making.

The partnership further envisages collaboration with startups, academic institutions, and international technology firms to foster innovation, research, and the development of AI-based applications across critical sectors of the economy.

Authorities have noted that the initiative aligns with the broader vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to transition the province toward a fully digitized and AI-integrated governance framework.

It is anticipated that the programme will contribute to the creation of over 100,000 employment opportunities, particularly within the technology and digital services domains, while enhancing workforce participation among youth.

Additionally, the development of a comprehensive data ecosystem is expected to improve credit accessibility for small and medium enterprises and the agricultural sector, while strengthening overall economic efficiency through the adoption of AI-enabled financial systems.
