Govt Approves Electric Bikes Scheme for Employees

The Federal Government has approved a policy initiative to facilitate the provision of electric motorcycles to government employees up to BPS-16 through an installment-based financing mechanism, as part of a broader strategy to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) within the country.

The decision was finalized during a high-level review meeting on electric mobility chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, wherein officials presented a roadmap targeting the conversion of approximately 30% of the national vehicle fleet to electric power within a five-year horizon.

Government representatives highlighted that the transition toward electric mobility is projected to yield substantial macroeconomic benefits, including a reduction in fuel import expenditures estimated at USD 4.5 billion, alongside contributions to energy security and environmental sustainability objectives.

The Prime Minister directed the relevant authorities to expedite the implementation of the National Electric Vehicle Policy, with particular emphasis on ensuring transparency and accountability in the disbursement of subsidies associated with electric motorcycles.

During the briefing, it was disclosed that regulatory authorities have issued 72 manufacturing certifications for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, in addition to granting approvals for four electric car models. Furthermore, a total of 123 applications have been received for the establishment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across various regions.

The Prime Minister further instructed that the rollout of the electric motorcycle scheme, along with the development of supporting infrastructure, be accelerated to facilitate broader market adoption and operational viability of electric vehicles within Pakistan.
