Govt Adds Subsidy Details to Electricity Bills

Electricity consumers receiving government subsidies on their power bills will now be able to view the exact amount of financial relief provided each month, following new directives issued by the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) aimed at enhancing transparency in subsidy distribution.

In a statement released on Thursday, the ministry confirmed that all electricity distribution companies have been instructed to explicitly display the value of government-funded subsidies on the monthly bills of eligible consumers.

The initiative is being implemented alongside the introduction of a QR code-based registration system, which will be incorporated into electricity bills to facilitate verification and streamline the subsidy allocation process.

According to the ministry, consumers will be required to scan the QR code and complete the registration procedure in order to continue availing targeted subsidies. Officials clarified that the initiative is not intended to discontinue subsidies, but rather to ensure that financial assistance reaches deserving households in a more transparent and efficient manner.

The statement further emphasised that the reforms are specifically designed to support low-income and lower-consumption electricity users, while improving accountability in the utilisation of public funds.

The Power Division reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding lower and middle-income consumers despite ongoing fiscal challenges, adding that subsidy reforms are being introduced to strengthen transparency and minimise misuse of state resources.

Consumers have been advised to complete the registration process promptly to avoid any issues related to continuation of subsidy benefits.

The ministry also stated that individuals facing difficulties regarding billing details or the registration procedure may contact the helplines of their respective electricity distribution companies for assistance.

The development forms part of broader government efforts to reform the power sector and improve targeting of energy subsidies amid increasing pressure on the national fiscal framework.
