Karachi Port Sets Historic Cargo Handling Record

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has achieved the highest annual cargo handling volume in its 138-year history, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s maritime and trade sector during the current fiscal year.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that KPT had exceeded its previous record of 54.685 million tonnes of cargo handled in a single fiscal year. He attributed the record performance to enhanced operational efficiency, improved management practices, and increased port handling capacity.

According to the minister, the milestone reflects continued progress in Pakistan’s maritime economy, strengthening of port infrastructure, and expansion of trade activity, while also demonstrating the positive impact of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs’ ongoing reform initiatives.

He congratulated KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (Retd.) Shahid Ahmed, along with the port’s officers, employees, and all stakeholders, for their contribution to achieving the historic performance.

The minister further stated that the federal government remains focused on modernising the country’s ports, expanding cargo handling capacity, upgrading logistics infrastructure, and developing port facilities in accordance with internationally recognised standards.

He added that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs is committed to enhancing the competitiveness of Pakistan’s ports, attracting greater domestic and foreign investment, facilitating trade, and supporting long-term economic growth through continued infrastructure development.

KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (Retd.) Shahid Ahmed also commended the organisation’s workforce, stating that the record cargo handling volume reflects the institution’s strategic planning, operational professionalism, and collective teamwork.

He reaffirmed KPT’s commitment to further improving operational efficiency, strengthening service delivery, and enhancing the port’s competitiveness to support Pakistan’s growing maritime and international trade requirements.
