FBR Plan to Purchase 1,100 Vehicles Sparks Debate

| 28-Jan-2025

The federal cabinet has approved the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) plan to acquire 77 more vehicles, bringing the total number of new cars for Grade 17 and 18 officers to 1,100. The acquisition, which is expected to cost over Rs6 billion, has been authorized by the Economic Coordination Committee, the Ministry of Finance’s Austerity Committee, and the Cabinet Division’s Vehicle Authorization Committee.

However, the decision has faced resistance. On January 13, the Senate Standing Committee on Finance sent a letter to the FBR and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, urging a suspension of the procurement process. The move has sparked criticism due to concerns about its timing, particularly given the country’s ongoing financial difficulties.

FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial defended the decision, stating that the purchase of 1,010 vehicles for tax officers is crucial for meeting the Rs 12.9 trillion tax collection target for FY25. His comments were made in response to objections from the Senate Standing Committee, where Senator Faisal Vawda labeled the move as “open corruption” and a misuse of public funds amid the tax shortfall.

Langrial explained that young officers require proper transportation for field visits to collect sales tax, emphasizing that the vehicles are necessary for the efficient execution of tax collection duties
