FBR Launches Redesigned Tax Return Amid Technical Issues

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced a redesigned income tax return for Tax Year 2026, though taxpayers and tax advisers have reportedly encountered several technical glitches while using the new filing system, Business Recorder reported.

Responding to concerns raised by stakeholders, FBR officials said the latest return has been transformed from a conventional static form into a highly interactive system intended to guide taxpayers through applicable tax requirements more efficiently.

The TY2026 return marks a major overhaul of the filing process and has been developed as part of the FBR’s broader digital transformation agenda envisioned by the prime minister. The redesigned platform aims to improve the accuracy of information, establish stronger links between declared income and assets, and make greater use of integrated taxpayer data.

FBR sources defended the system, saying its current behaviour reflects its intended design and is aimed at improving compliance. The return now adapts automatically according to an individual’s declared income sources. For example, taxpayers earning only through employment will see only the relevant sections instead of being presented with unnecessary portions of the form.

The revenue authority acknowledged that a newly added immovable-property feature has generated questions among taxpayers and professional tax bodies. Officials explained that the feature was introduced intentionally to strengthen data accuracy by connecting property ownership with rental and agricultural income information.

Although Capital Gains Tax (CGT) calculations can be complicated, FBR said the redesigned return has made the process more straightforward. Once taxpayers enter the property's sale price and date of disposal, the system automatically calculates the applicable tax.

To help users understand the revised filing requirements, FBR has prepared a detailed user guide along with a comprehensive video tutorial explaining property-related information. Both resources have been made available through the IRIS portal.

The tax authority further claimed that filing trends and submitted data indicate the redesigned return is becoming more user-friendly, responsive and effective for taxpayers.

Meanwhile, a tax expert advised FBR to ensure that the increasing deployment of Artificial Intelligence in tax administration does not diminish the importance of tax consultants, advocates and other qualified professionals. The expert stressed that technology should enhance professional decision-making rather than eliminate the need for human expertise.
