Petrol and Diesel Prices Increased Until August 24

The government has raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs3.81 and Rs3.59 per litre, respectively, for a limited three-day period from August 22 to August 24, 2026, following changes under the revised petroleum pricing mechanism.

According to the Petroleum Division, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has increased the ex-depot price of Motor Spirit from Rs337.78 to Rs341.59 per litre. The price of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) has also gone up, rising from Rs364.70 to Rs368.29 per litre. The new rates will remain effective through August 24.

The short-term increase is expected to add to fuel expenses for motorists, transport operators, businesses, farmers and other consumers throughout the country. However, unlike a conventional monthly adjustment, the latest prices have been announced specifically for a three-day period.

Petrol remains a major source of fuel for light vehicles in Pakistan and is widely used by motorcycles, cars, taxis, rickshaws and other vehicles. Because millions of people depend on petrol for everyday transportation, changes in its price can directly affect commuting expenses for workers, students, shoppers and other consumers.

Small commercial and passenger vehicles in urban as well as rural areas also rely heavily on petrol. Higher prices can therefore increase the daily travel budgets of households while raising operating expenses for businesses dependent on petrol-powered transport.

Diesel plays an even broader role across the national economy. Heavy vehicles including trucks, buses, trailers and other commercial transport largely depend on HSD to move passengers and cargo throughout the country. Diesel costs therefore have a direct connection with freight charges and the movement of agricultural, industrial and consumer goods.

The agricultural sector is another major diesel user. Tractors, tube-wells, harvesters and other farming machinery frequently operate on diesel, meaning higher HSD prices can increase cultivation costs as well as expenses involved in transporting agricultural products.

Diesel is also widely used to operate construction equipment, heavy machinery and generators. Many businesses and commercial facilities depend on diesel generators as backup power sources, making fluctuations in HSD prices relevant to sectors beyond transportation.

Transportation remains Pakistan’s largest consumer of petroleum products. As a result, increases in petrol and diesel prices can create broader economic pressure by raising vehicle running costs and, particularly through diesel, increasing freight and transportation expenses.

Under the latest revision, petrol will cost Rs341.59 per litre while HSD will be priced at Rs368.29 per litre until August 24. A further adjustment could follow after the three-day period under the revised petroleum pricing system.
