FBR Changes Tax Return Form Weeks Before Deadline

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced amendments to the income tax return form for Tax Year 2026, just weeks before the statutory deadline for filing returns on September 30.

Through SRO 1495(I)/2026 issued on Thursday, the FBR amended provisions of the Income Tax Rules, 2002.

As part of the changes, new Parts II-ZE, II-ZF, II-ZG and II-ZH have been inserted into the Second Schedule following Part II-ZD.

The timing of the amendments has raised concerns among tax professionals, who say changes to the income tax return form at this late stage could create legal and technical complications for taxpayers and tax practitioners.

A tax expert said the revisions could make the filing process more difficult, particularly with the September 30 deadline approaching, and urged the FBR to provide immediate clarification regarding the purpose and application of the newly introduced provisions.

The expert warned that if clear guidance is not issued promptly, taxpayers and practitioners could encounter difficulties in completing and submitting their tax returns within the legally prescribed timeframe.
