Petrol Hits Record Rs358.77 Per Litre

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has sharply increased petrol and High Speed Diesel (HSD) prices for September 8, raising petrol by Rs12.90 per litre to a record Rs358.77, while diesel has become Rs3.72 more expensive.

The Petroleum Division, Ministry of Energy, announced the revision on September 7, stating that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had adjusted the ex-depot prices under the petroleum pricing mechanism approved by the federal government.

According to the notification, the price of Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, has climbed from Rs345.87 to Rs358.77 per litre, representing an increase of Rs12.90.

The price of HSD has also risen from Rs378.05 to Rs381.77 per litre, reflecting an increase of Rs3.72 per litre.

The latest adjustment has pushed petrol to a new record level, placing additional financial pressure on consumers already dealing with rising transportation and household expenses.

Petrol is heavily relied upon by motorcycles, rickshaws and small cars, making fuel price increases particularly significant for daily commuters. The latest hike is expected to increase travel costs for workers, students and other people dependent on private and public transport.

The impact is also likely to extend beyond individual motorists. Higher petrol prices can raise operating expenses for transport, delivery and logistics services, potentially increasing the prices of goods and services transported by road.

The increase in HSD is particularly important for Pakistan’s transportation and agriculture sectors. Diesel is widely used by trucks, buses and coaches involved in moving passengers and commodities throughout the country.

Agricultural machinery, including tractors, harvesters and tubewells, also relies heavily on diesel. Consequently, higher diesel costs can increase farming and transportation expenses and potentially place further pressure on prices of agricultural products and other essential goods.

The revised rates have been determined under the petroleum pricing mechanism, which allows domestic fuel prices to be adjusted periodically according to international market movements and other relevant pricing factors.

The latest increase is expected to draw significant attention from motorists, transport operators, traders and farmers because fuel costs directly influence transportation expenses and wider economic activity.

With petrol now selling at Rs358.77 per litre from September 8, motorists will face noticeably higher fuel expenses, while diesel users will also have to absorb the increased HSD price of Rs381.77 per litre.
