Petrol Hits Rs364.35 After Second Straight Hike

ISLAMABAD: Petrol and High Speed Diesel (HSD) prices have been raised again, with petrol increasing by Rs5.58 per litre and diesel by Rs4.18 for September 9, 2026, adding further pressure on consumers just a day after another major fuel price hike.

The Petroleum Division said the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) revised the ex-depot prices of petroleum products under the federal government’s revised petroleum pricing mechanism.

Following the latest adjustment, the ex-depot price of petrol has climbed from Rs358.77 to Rs364.35 per litre. The price of HSD has also risen from Rs381.77 to Rs385.95 per litre.

Over the last two days, petrol has become Rs18.48 per litre more expensive, while the price of HSD has increased by Rs7.90 per litre, creating a significant additional burden for households and businesses.

Consumers will now face a petrol price of Rs364.35 per litre and an HSD price of Rs385.95 per litre.

The latest petrol hike is expected to have an immediate impact on millions of motorcycle and car users who depend on fuel for their daily travel. Commuters travelling to workplaces, educational institutions, businesses and other destinations will have to absorb higher transportation expenses.

Petrol is also widely used by taxis, ride-hailing services, delivery companies and other light transport operators. Higher fuel prices can therefore increase their operating costs and potentially lead to higher fares or delivery charges.

The impact of rising diesel prices is even broader. HSD is extensively consumed by trucks, buses, commercial vehicles, agricultural machinery and other heavy equipment, making it a major component of transportation and production expenses.

Higher diesel costs can raise the expense of transporting agricultural products, food, industrial inputs and finished goods across the country. Transport companies may pass additional fuel expenses on to customers through increased freight charges, potentially pushing up retail prices.

The latest increase comes immediately after petrol was raised by Rs12.90 per litre and HSD by Rs3.72 per litre for September 8.

The back-to-back increases have intensified pressure on household budgets and business expenses, particularly for people and sectors heavily dependent on road transportation.

Repeated fuel price increases can also create wider economic pressure because transportation costs are closely linked to the prices of goods and services. Rising commuting expenses, public transport fares and essential commodity prices could further reduce household purchasing power.

The latest revision has been implemented under the revised petroleum pricing mechanism, which allows fuel prices to be adjusted daily according to the applicable pricing formula and prevailing market conditions.
