NEPRA Proposes New Grid-Sharing Charges For High-Rise Buildings

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has proposed introducing grid-sharing charges for certain high-rise buildings and industrial consumers through amendments to its Consumer Service Manual.

According to the proposed changes, NEPRA is seeking public feedback on a new requirement under which owners of buildings that need dedicated transformers with a capacity exceeding 500 kilovolt-amperes (kVA) would have to pay the applicable grid-sharing charges for their electricity connections.

The proposed amendments also include changes to connection rules for industrial consumers. Under the new framework, industrial users would be allowed to obtain multiple electricity connections with a combined load of up to 15 megawatts (MW).

NEPRA has further proposed revisions to the charges applicable to industrial and steel-furnace consumers.

The regulator has invited stakeholders and the public to submit feedback on the proposed amendments. The changes will remain proposals until the consultation process is completed and the amendments to the Consumer Service Manual are formally approved.
