NHA Makes M Tag Mandatory for All Motorway Travelers Starting February 2025

| 04-Feb-2025

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has officially implemented a new toll collection policy, making M-Tag usage compulsory for all motorway commuters starting February 1, 2025. According to a notification released on January 31, the initiative seeks to transition to a completely digital tolling system to minimize cash transactions and improve traffic management.

As part of this update, vehicles without an M-Tag or with insufficient account balance will face an additional 25% charge on toll fees, with a minimum extra cost of Rs. 50. Motorists are urged to obtain their M-Tags at authorized toll plazas or service centers to avoid these extra fees.

The M-Tag system, a prepaid RFID technology, automatically deducts toll charges as vehicles pass through toll plazas without needing to stop. This system links directly to a user’s account, which must be regularly topped up to ensure uninterrupted service.

This change is aimed at facilitating smoother, faster toll collection and improving overall traffic flow, especially with the growing number of vehicles on Pakistan’s motorways. To comply with the new policy and avoid fines, drivers should ensure they register for M-Tags ahead of the February 1 deadline
