Sales tax revenue from electricity surged to Rs 283.177 billion during July-December 2024-25, marking a 53.5% increase from Rs 184.468 billion in the same period last year, according to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). This made electricity the top contributor to domestic sales tax collection in H1 FY 2024-25.
Sales tax from petroleum products rose 8.7% to Rs 82.521 billion, compared to Rs 75.911 billion in 2023-24. The sugar sector ranked third, with Rs 58.957 billion collected, reflecting a 26.4% increase from Rs 46.642 billion last year.
The cement sector posted a 47.7% surge in sales tax, reaching Rs 48.275 billion, up from Rs 32.686 billion. Similarly, the textile sector recorded Rs 43.389 billion from cotton yarn, a 37.2% rise from Rs 31.628 billion.
However, sales tax from natural gas declined 14.9% to Rs 21.086 billion, down from Rs 24.774 billion in 2023-24. The cigarette industry also saw a 26.1% drop, with collections falling to Rs 19.668 billion from Rs 26.605 billion.
Meanwhile, sales tax from aerated water saw an 8.6% rise, reaching Rs 13.153 billion, up from Rs 12.113 billion in the previous year.
