The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has taken action against price gouging during Ramazan, arresting 102 shopkeepers for overcharging on essential goods, according to an official district report released on the seventh day of the holy month.
Officials carried out 397 price inspections, filed 8 legal cases, and imposed fines totaling Rs 87,000 to enforce government-set rates. With a focus on market compliance, price control magistrates have intensified inspections, cracking down on businesses violating official price lists.
Authorities issued fines for overpricing essential items such as flour, cooking oil, and pulses. Complaints about inflated prices prompted immediate raids, with offenders facing legal consequences. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad, Irfan Nawaz Memon, confirmed that six Ramazan bazaars and 20 subsidized “fair price shops” are operational, ensuring the availability of affordable essentials.
To further support consumers, special stalls have been set up offering sugar, ghee, and eggs at reduced rates, with sugar and ghee priced Rs 30 lower per kilogram compared to the market. A total of 15 types of vegetables and fruits are also being sold at subsidized rates to ease financial strain on families.
DC Memon stressed that strict monitoring will continue, urging citizens to report price violations via the designated helpline. He assured that daily inspections by magistrates and administrative teams will prevent consumer exploitation.
The ICT administration has warned of continued legal action against businesses ignoring price regulations, with daily compliance reports being reviewed. While citizens have welcomed these measures, many are demanding stricter penalties for repeat offenders.
