On Friday, the government announced a minor reduction in petrol prices, cutting Re1 per litre effective immediately until April 15. This adjustment follows appeals from oil marketing companies seeking to prevent supply chain disruptions ahead of Eidul Fitr.
The new petrol price is Rs254.63 per litre, down from Rs255.64—a 0.2% decrease. However, high-speed diesel (HSD), kerosene, and light diesel prices remain unchanged. Meanwhile, the petroleum levy on high-octane blending component (HOBC) 97RON and 95RON has been raised by Rs20 per litre, aligning it with the Rs70 per litre levy already applied to petrol and diesel.
Current Fuel Prices:
Petrol: Rs254.63/litre
HSD: Rs258.64/litre
Kerosene: Rs168.12/litre
Light Diesel: Rs153.34/litre
Although there is no general sales tax (GST) on petroleum products, the government still imposes various levies, customs duties, and distribution margins that contribute to overall fuel costs.
This early price adjustment was made following concerns from the Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC), which highlighted potential fuel shortages due to limited dealer inventories. The typical fortnightly price review coinciding with Eid could have delayed fuel deliveries, prompting authorities to revise prices earlier than scheduled to maintain smooth supply during the holidays.
