ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA) has issued an urgent plea to the federal government to swiftly release Rs6.5 billion in overdue payments owed by the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) to ghee and cooking oil producers, cautioning that further delays imperil the industry’s survival.
PVMA Chairman Sheikh Umer Rehan revealed in a statement that the dues have languished for over a year despite relentless reminders. Manufacturers nationwide supplied Rs6.5 billion in goods to USC without compensation, triggering a crippling liquidity crisis.
“Industrialists are battling to cover operational costs and import raw materials, stalling production cycles,” Rehan warned, stressing that extended non-payment could doom the sector’s sustainability.
The PVMA has persistently flagged the issue with the finance, industries, and commerce ministries, yet no tangible action has emerged. “This procrastination is shattering business confidence and tarnishing government credibility,” he asserted.
Rehan implored Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Industries Haroon Akhtar Khan to personally intervene, launch an inquiry, and expedite disbursement.
He underscored the ghee and cooking oil sector’s pivotal role in food security and employment, insisting prompt payments are indispensable for its economic contributions.
