ISLAMABAD: The Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) has launched a full-scale probe into the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) after a public interest complaint exposed a massive IRIS glitch that swallowed thousands of online extension requests for Tax Year 2025 returns.
Taxpayers who filed legitimate extension applications via the IRIS portal watched in horror as their requests languished in the Outbox, never processed, leaving them exposed to late-filing penalties as the deadline loomed.
The FTO has summoned FBR’s top brass — Member Operations, Member IR-Policy, and DG IT — to appear on November 19, 2025 and explain the catastrophic failure.
The intervention shines a blazing spotlight on chronic delays and systemic rot in FBR’s digital tax machinery that continue to torment compliant taxpayers.
