PUBLIC NOTICE NO. 07/1998 (APPRAISMENT)

SUB:  MENTION OF IMPORTER’S NAME ON PAY ORDERS COVERING  DUTY/TAXES.

During investigation of a case regarding illegal encashment of pay orders covering duty and taxes submitted by the importer in favour of Collector of Customs Appraisement, it was revealed that such pay orders were encased by assigning fake case numbers and affixing forged bank stamp: causing loss to the Government. Scrutiny of these pay order showed that there was no mention of importer’s name on these pay orders. Had the names of the importers been mentioned on these pay orders, the fraud committed could have been averted.

2.         In order to curb such frauds in future, it is notified for information of all concerned that henceforth all the importers/clearing agents shall invariably mention concerned importers’ name on the pay order covering duty/taxes. Under no circumstances, the Cash Section shall forward a cash transaction exceeding Rs.10, 000/ to the Bank, on account: of duty/taxes etc. leviable on the goods in an individual case.

3.         The cash Section of the Custom House shall invariably feed correct pay order number and amount in the computer. Any delinquency on this count, shall be viewed seriously.
