The Islamabad High Court (IHC) told the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to get an automatic tax refund system going, but the FBR hasn’t done much about it yet, according to a news report. The whole point was to make refunds quicker and cut down on taxpayers having to deal with tax workers, but it’s been a while and nothing’s really changed.
A big report with a solid game plan was given to the court, showing how to make this happen. Still, Waheed Shahzad Butt, the lawyer pushing this case, said the FBR isn’t moving forward, even after one of its big shots promised they would.
Butt’s upset because the government keeps saying they want taxes to go digital, but this delay looks bad. He thinks it’s making things less open and has people wondering if the FBR really cares about doing things fast or following the court. He also said switching to an automatic setup would smooth things out and prove the FBR takes the law seriously.
The court mentioned that the FBR said they’d use a $25 million loan from the World Bank to get this done. It looked like everything was set in theory, but the court added that the lawyer could come back if the FBR doesn’t follow through. Even with all this, the FBR’s slow pace is holding things up, and people waiting for their refunds are still stuck without a better system.
