KARACHI: Bank of Punjab (BoP) stormed the 10th Pakistan Banking Awards on Friday, snatching three crowns—Best Bank for Agriculture Inclusion, Women Inclusion, and SMEs—while Meezan Bank Ltd clinched Best Bank for the third straight year.
Bank Alfalah doubled up with Digital Excellence and Customer Engagement; Kashf Foundation bagged Best Microfinance, Faysal Bank Best Mid-sized, HBL Best for ESG.
SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad, handing out trophies, praised the awards but blasted the sector’s addiction to risk-free government paper and paltry private lending. He demanded a decade-long overhaul: innovation, inclusion, responsibility.
Ahmad warned: “Banks hooked on easy govt returns will be buried by those mobilizing deposits and serving SMEs, small savers.”
Four imperatives: embed digital, harness AI/ML for risk & products, bake climate risk into lending, launch green finance, realign to supercharge exporters.
