Diesel Price Slashed by Rs32.63

Diesel Price Slashed by Rs32.63

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has dramatically reduced the price of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) by Rs32.63 per litre while increasing petrol by Rs2.97 per litre under the revised petroleum pricing mechanism for August 20, 2026.

According to the Petroleum Division, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has recalculated the ex-depot prices of petroleum products in line with the pricing framework approved by the federal government.

Following the latest adjustment, the ex-depot price of HSD has fallen from Rs395.69 to Rs363.06 per litre, delivering a major reduction of Rs32.63 per litre.

Petrol, or Motor Spirit (MS), has moved in the opposite direction. Its price has increased by Rs2.97 per litre, rising from Rs334.54 to Rs337.51 per litre.

The latest decision has created a significant gap in the movement of the two major fuels, with diesel users receiving substantial relief while consumers dependent on petrol will face an additional cost from August 20.

HSD is extensively used by heavy transport vehicles such as trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles. It is also a major fuel for agricultural machinery, including tractors, while industries and businesses frequently use diesel-powered generators and heavy equipment.

The Rs32.63 reduction could therefore considerably reduce operating expenses for transporters, farmers and businesses that depend on diesel vehicles and machinery.

The impact could be particularly noticeable in the transport sector, where trucks and other freight vehicles consume significant quantities of HSD to move goods across the country. The lower rate is expected to reduce their fuel expenditure compared with the previous pricing level.

Agricultural users could also benefit from the reduction, as tractors and other farm machinery commonly operate on diesel. Lower HSD prices could consequently reduce fuel-related expenses associated with farming activities.

Petrol is primarily consumed by cars, motorcycles, rickshaws and other light vehicles. The Rs2.97 per litre increase will therefore directly raise fuel expenses for motorists and daily commuters.

Under the revised rates, petrol will cost Rs337.51 per litre at the ex-depot level, while HSD will be priced at Rs363.06 per litre for August 20, 2026.

The new diesel rate represents an approximately 8.25% decline from its previous price of Rs395.69 per litre. Meanwhile, petrol has increased by around 0.89% from Rs334.54 per litre.

The contrasting adjustments mean the latest petroleum price decision provides significant relief to diesel consumers but places additional financial pressure on users of petrol-powered vehicles.

The revised rates will remain applicable for August 20, 2026, under the federal government’s updated petroleum pricing mechanism.
